Our hotel was not on the main island of Venice but on one of the suburb islands, persay, just off the main island in the lagoon. On our way back the first night, we got to go on a private boat tour of the main canal without having to dock at any of the bus boat stops. These are some of the pictures from that boat ride.
...one thing that really amazed me about Venice was how close the buildings were to the level of the water. From a distance, it really looks like someone simply flooded a large city and just the top portions of the buildings are sticking out. They are so low that water is constantly splashing on the sidewalks, especially during high tide. It often floods some of the lower areas too, one in particular being St. Mark's Square, the main piazza of the city. We even had the chance to see it flood over while we were there (I'll post pictures in another entry). Fortunately, no one got too wet even in the floods (though a guy from one of the other schools actually fell off one of the bus boats the last night we were there! a little too much to drink combined with some rough waters and a hard docking that made the boat tip just a little too far... he made it out fine, btw, but what a story, lol).
... I suppose a lot of the buildings had to be right on the water because for most of them, the first floor is a boat garage used in the past for docking the family boats as well as friends or merchants delivering goods. If the bottom floor wasn't right on the water, the boats wouldn't have been able to float in.
... one thing I really enjoyed about Venice was all the beautiful colored buildings. I really love all the deep earthy warm colors that brighten up the horizon ...perhaps it seemed so much more vibrant right after getting back from the nice but somewhat drab Paris cityscape...
