Definitely a must see, St. Peter's Basilica. We must have spent three weeks at least studying this building in architectural history. It was pretty cool to see in person, though I did feel a little rushed by our professor.
...columns - part of the collonade "arms" the stretch out of the basilica and "hug" the oval piazza.
the basilica itself is actually not in Rome, or even Italy, but in Vatican City. These are a couple of the guards, all of which dress in odd renaissance uniforms. Security was very tight to get in, just as bad as airports (except you can take water bottles).
...the ceiling in the front foyer - so ornate, and it's not even inside the chapel yet.
... all the detail put, even in the floor tiles. The center of the nave was blocked off with red curtained partitions, blocking off the aisle that the pope walks down each week to greet the people. It was lined with large tile mosaics of famous Italian buildings.
... Michaelangelo's first Pieta, completed when he was my age. Simply astounding, to think he had that much skill already so early in his prolific life.
... the grandeur of the inside.
... in the center under the dome above the alter, this massive cover with twisting columns dominates the scene.
... the chair of Peter at the back of the chapel, very ornate and lively baroque style sculpture.
Later that evening, after all of our tours, a few of my friends and I went back to take more pictures with the crowds mostly gone and at our own pace.
